This is a project that I do with my Physics classes. However, we have done this with younger kids with great results!
I use this after a discussion concering Newton's Laws. This project is a compilation of ideas from 101 Fun Tricks With Physics book with added items from the Glencoe Physics textbook. The textbook is quite old, but the activity may still be in current textbooks.
Students can build their own glider. They then have to fly it and make engineering decisions about any problems. Afterward, students reflect on the mechanics of flight.
I normally let students decorate their gliders so that they can inject some creativity and personality into the project. There are very few safety issues with this activity in relation to other, more involved, activities.
